Top 5 – Movies Coming to Netflix in May

Here’s the first of a new monthly piece where I will discuss the best movies coming to Netflix in the upcoming month.  Since almost everyone uses Netflix, I thought I would give my recommendations on some of the movies they are getting.  I’m not going to post about T.V. shows because well, I don’t want to.  You can find the entire list of what’s coming out this month right here, but for now, here are my five favorite movies coming to Netflix in May.

JustFriends

5 – Just Friends (Roger Kumble, 2005)

This is one of Ryan Reynolds’ best movies and is one of the few movies in the early 2000’s to take him away from that Van Wilder (2002) image he established.  Putting the dreaded friend zone on the map, Reynolds is perfect as an L.A. hotshot who goes back to his hometown for the weekend during the holidays where old flings arise.  Anna Farris co-starts as an obnoxious pop diva and is so funny that if it weren’t for Ryan Reynolds in a fat suit and a retainer, she would have stolen the whole movie.  This movie cracks me up every time I watch it.

BringItOn

4 – Bring It On (Peyton Reed, 2000)

I shouldn’t like this movie as much as I do, but it’s great.  Taking us deep into the world of competitive high school cheerleading, a championship squad discovers that their routine has been stolen from an inner-city school which puts a ton of pressure on new captain Torrance (Kirsten Dunst) to win again.  This movie is cheesy, funny, and features great cheer routines and classic sports movie tropes.  Also, Gabrielle Union shines as the captain of the inner city school and I still have a crush on Eliza Dushku from this movie.  It might be a guilty pleasure of mine, but it’s awesome in every way.

Replacements

3 – The Replacements (Howard Deutch, 2000)

Another great sports movie coming to Netflix.  This time, we head to the football field, following a group of players who replace the usual starters when they go on strike.  This movie is like a raunchier, less racist version of Remember the Titans (2000).  Keanu Reeves is great as the starting quarterback Shane Falco, who’s respected by no one because he took a dive in college and Gene Hackman is excellent as the head coach and proves why he is one of the best cinematic coaches.  And I loved Jon Favreau as the quick tempered linebacker.  Filled with great football action, comedy, and a few dance numbers, The Replacements doesn’t get the love it deserves as a great football team.

goosebumps

2 – Goosebumps (Rob Letterman, 2015)

Maybe it’s the nostalgia in me, but I absolutely loved Goosebumps.  I grew up reading the books and this movie did those books justice and then some.  It brings all the books together as the horrifying ventriloquist dummy Slappy (voiced by Jack Black) frees all the monsters from the book and terrorizes a small Delaware town where author R.L. Stein (Jack Black) and a few kids try to stop them.  This movie is just so much, with a perfect mix of action, comedy, and thrills.  It landed in my Top 20 of all movies last year and if you were unable to see this in theaters, this is a must see for you.

39pleasantville

1 – Pleasantville (Gary Ross, 1998)

Pleasantville is a wonderful movie.  When two 90’s teens (Tobey Maguire & Reese Witherspoon) find themselves in a 1950’s television show, their influence begins to change the entire world.  This movie is stunning to look at, with dazzling cinematography and art direction.  The colors really pop against the black and white background, making this one of the most beautiful movies of the 1990’s.  The movie has an all-star cast featuring Maguire, Witherspoon, William H. Macy, Paul Walker, Joan Allen (in a one of the best performances of her career), and Jeff Daniels.  This movie is creative, sweet, funny, and dramatic, with a lot of deep messages about racism.  Pleasantville is a true gem and a movie everyone needs to see.
